Root Canal

Some teeth can require a “root canal” to be able to restore and prevent an abscess in future. The nerve of the tooth can be injured by trauma or bacteria and cause the nerve tissue inside the tooth to die or become infected.  Dead teeth and even infected teeth can lay dormant for a long time without symptoms.  Occasionally being discovered by performing a dental procedure on that tooth resulting in tooth ache.  In these cases, the diagnosis is Irreversible pulpitis.  Meaning it will never get better on its own and antibiotics may help but will not fix the underlying issue.  The inside of the tooth.

This is accomplished by making an access into the nerve chamber and cleaning out the majority of dead or infected pulp material and sealing the canals with an inert rubber called gutta percha.  This process has an effect of trapping and sealing in any debris that may be left behind so there is no way it can continue to infect surrounding support structures preventing another abscess.

In most cases, a crown is recommended as the restoration of choice for a tooth that required a root canal treatment.
