Crown and Bridge
Crowning a tooth may be the best way to save it from further breakdown and prevent loss or involvement of the nerve. Teeth can crack both with and without previous restorations, although old amalgam fillings crack teeth more than almost anything else.
An old amalgam filling will have years of oxidation layers that build up over the years. Eventually the pressure from all the additional layers inside the tooth causes the tooth to split apart at anatomical weak points such as grooves.
Dr. Hargett prefers fixing problems instead of patching them and many times a crown is just the solution to such a problem.
When there is a tooth missing or teeth missing, with good strong teeth on either side, a bridge may be indicated. This treatment is recommended especially when the teeth on each side of the space would also benefit from being crowned and not pristine.
One of the biggest benefits of crowns and especially bridges is the short wait time to replace missing teeth. With crowns and bridges, it is typically completed in just 3 weeks compared to 15 weeks for most implant supported crowns due to longer implant healing times.
