Gum Therapy
Treating gum tissue problems can: Help save teeth recession from aggressive brushing can cause exposure of root service as well as bone loss. Learning proper brushing techniques combined with even small procedure can correcr some defects and help protect root surfaces from decay, abrasion, and sensitivity.
Minimize or Prevent Certain Diseases
Every patient receives base line recordings of their gum health. This as well as a general health evaluation helps determine what type of treatment your gums may need. Gum disease is described as “the silent killer of teeth” by the ADA. Most people effected never even know they have gum disease until teeth start to shift and loosen.
It is critical to catch this process as early as possible. Advanced periodontal disease is difficult to control especially when combined with other health issues such as diabetes or smoking.
A procedure called scaling and root plaining can be used to remove bacteria from deep under gum tissue as well as debriding the root surface of calculus (calcified bacteria) and plaque (soft bacteria). Its been proven that gum disease can contribute to the advancement of systemic illnesses such as heart disease.
Imrove Cosmetic Issues
Gum recession can be caused by disease, mechanical abrasion or movement of a tooth. Some patients may have condition referred to as over eruption of gum tissue that makes their teeth appear shorter than they should. This can happen naturally or with the treatment of certain types of medication. Removing a small amount of over grown tissue is sometimes all that is necessary to vastly improve cosmetic appearance.
Recession not only happens on natural teeth, but also implants for many of the same reasons. This can lead to exposure of metal portions of the implant. Depending on the health of the gum tissue, simply moving tissue around may help cover exposures of implants and or margins of crowns.
Early intervention is key to greater esthetic results combined with understanding or minimizing the underlying cause.
